An interesting issue, personally I don't see an issue with companies taking data for a service so long as everybody agrees.
I mean, I don't want my data stored by loads of companies and sold to third parties, but I'm fairly careful about who I let sell my data.
It's important to understand that without that data collection, the service probably wouldn't exist. Same goes for a lot of apps like the VoIP apps you can get, if you don't want people to collect data on you, you need to pay.
